Collective Memory: Transposing Pavlov’s Experiment to Robot Swarms

چکیده
Remembering information is a fundamental aspect of cognition present in numerous natural systems. It allows adaptation the behavior as function previously encountered situations. For instance, many living organisms use memory to recall if given situation incurred penalty or reward and rely on that avoid reproduce situation. In groups, commonly studied case where individual members are themselves capable learning few them hold pieces can be later retrieved for benefits group. Here, we investigate how group may display when have reactive behaviors not learn any information. The well known conditioning experiments Pavlov illustrate single animals memorize stimuli associated with trigger related behavioral response even absence reward. To study demonstrate collective artificial systems, get inspiration from propose setup tailored testing our robotic swarm. We devised novel based process aggregation which robots exhibit memory. show encoding, storing, retrieving at level individuals.

Collective Construction with Robot Swarms
Social insects build large, complex structures, which emerge through the collective actions of many simple agents acting with no centralized control or preplanning. These natural systems inspire the research topic of collective construction, in which the goal is to engineer artificial systems that build in a similar way, with swarms of simple robots producing desired structures. In this chapter...
متن کاملCollective Energy Foraging of Robot Swarms and Robot Organisms
Cooperation and competition among stand-alone swarm agents increase collective fitness of the whole system. A principally new kind of collective systems is demonstrated by some bacteria and fungi, when they build symbiotic organisms. Symbiotic life forms emerge new functional and self-developmental capabilities, which allow better survival of swarm agents in different environments. In this pape...
متن کاملAdaptive collective decision-making in limited robot swarms without communication
In this work we investigate spatial collective decision-making in a swarm of microrobots, inspired by the thermotactic aggregation behavior of honeybees. The sensing and navigation capabilities of these robots are intentionally limited; no digital sensor data processing and no direct communication are allowed. In this way, we can approximate the features of smaller mesoscopic-scale systems and ...
متن کاملCollective motion of predictive swarms
Theoretical models of populations and swarms typically start with the assumption that the motion of agents is governed by the local stimuli. However, an intelligent agent, with some understanding of the laws that govern its habitat, can anticipate the future, and make predictions to gather resources more efficiently. Here we study a specific model of this kind, where agents aim to maximize thei...
متن کاملCoordinating Massive Robot Swarms
This chapter addresses the problem of how to coordinate the behavior of very large numbers of microrobots in order to assemble complex, hierarchically structured physical objects. The approach is patterned after morphogenetic processes during embryological development, in which masses of simple agents (cells) coordinate to produce complex three-dimensional structures. In order to ensure that th...
